Notion and ClickUp both promise one workspace for docs and projects, but each starts from a different side. Notion is a docs and wiki tool with databases that can track projects. ClickUp is a project management tool that adds docs, chat and whiteboards. Choose Notion if most of your team's work is writing and organising knowledge. Choose ClickUp if most of it is planning, assigning and tracking tasks.

What is the main difference between Notion and ClickUp?

In Notion, everything is a page made of blocks: text, headings, lists, images, tables, code and embeds. Pages nest inside pages to form a team wiki. Databases hold structured items, such as projects or content pieces, and show them as tables, boards, calendars, timelines or charts. Project management in Notion is something you build from those parts.

In ClickUp, everything starts from tasks, organised in Spaces, Folders and Lists. Tasks have subtasks, assignees, priorities and custom fields, and show as lists, boards, calendars or Gantt charts. Docs sit next to the tasks they describe, ClickUp Chat adds channels and direct messages, and dashboards report on workload, sprints, time and goals.

How do Notion and ClickUp compare on price?

Prices below were checked on each vendor's pricing page on 1 November 2026, in US dollars per seat or user per month.

PlanBilled yearlyMonthly or regular price
Notion Free / ClickUp Free Forever$0$0
Notion Plus$10$12 billed monthly
Notion Business$20$24 billed monthly
ClickUp Core$9Regular price $12
ClickUp Business$17Regular price $25
ClickUp Max$100Regular price $120
Enterprise (both)CustomCustom

ClickUp lists its yearly prices next to a regular price and says yearly billing saves up to 33%.

The base prices are close, so the real difference is what each plan includes. ClickUp Core at $9 includes unlimited storage, Gantt charts, chat, goals and 1,000 automations a month. Notion Plus at $10 includes unlimited blocks, custom forms and sites, charts, database automations and 30 days of page history.

AI is where the plans split most. Notion's full AI features, including Notion Agent, Custom Agents and AI Meeting Notes, come with Business at $20, while Free and Plus get only a limited trial. Notion says Custom Agents are free to try, then cost $10 per 1,000 monthly Notion credits. ClickUp includes AI credits on every paid plan and sells more at $10 per 10,000 credits.

Which is easier to set up?

Both need setup, because both are flexible. Notion's most common G2 complaint is the learning curve, and its ease of setup score (8.2 out of 10) is lower than its score for meeting requirements (8.8). Someone has to design the workspace.

ClickUp reviewers praise its ease of use once it is set up, but complain about a learning curve caused by the number of features, a complex first setup and slow loading on large lists. Notion has fewer building blocks, pages and databases, while ClickUp has more built-in features to configure.

Which has the better free plan?

It depends on team size. Notion's Free plan is aimed at individuals: a single-member workspace can add as many pages and blocks as it likes, but block storage is limited once two or more members join, uploads are capped at 5 MB and page history lasts 7 days.

ClickUp Free Forever suits teams better. It allows unlimited tasks and unlimited free members, with 60 MB of storage, one form and five Spaces. Neither vendor offers a time-limited trial of paid plans on its pricing page, though ClickUp offers a full refund within 30 days.

Which works better for marketing teams?

Notion fits marketing teams whose work is mostly words: campaign briefs, content calendars, onboarding guides and meeting notes. A content calendar database can show the same pieces as a board by status or a calendar by publish date, and forms can collect requests. You can also publish pages as a simple website.

ClickUp fits marketing teams that juggle many tasks and deadlines. Campaign plans can use Gantt charts and dashboards, briefs live in docs linked to their tasks, whiteboards help with planning, and team discussion happens in Chat. Business adds resource management and timesheets for agencies or teams that track capacity.

Which works better for sales teams?

Neither replaces a CRM. Notion suits sales knowledge such as playbooks, onboarding guides and meeting notes, and a database can track contacts and deals by status. Its template marketplace has a CRM category listing more than 2,000 templates.

ClickUp offers its own CRM template for contacts, leads and pipeline stages, which suits a small team running a simple process next to its projects. It has no built-in calling or sales sequences. Sales teams that need pipelines, email tracking and forecasting should look at HubSpot CRM or Pipedrive.

What do users say about Notion and ClickUp?

On G2, Notion holds 4.6 out of 5 from about 14,000 reviews, and ClickUp 4.6 from more than 15,000. Notion reviewers praise its ease of use and range of features, and complain about the learning curve and limited features in some areas. ClickUp reviewers praise its flexible task management and the number of features, and complain about complexity and speed. These ratings were checked on 31 October 2026.

The bottom line

Choose Notion if your team needs a wiki, docs and light project tracking in one place, and you want to design the workspace your way. Choose ClickUp if project management comes first, you need Gantt charts, workload and time tracking, and you want chat and a free plan for the whole team.
