To personalize a B2B website, first find out which company is visiting, usually with a reverse IP lookup. Then group visitors into a few segments, such as industry or company size, and change a small number of high-impact elements for each segment: the headline, the customer logos, the case study and the call to action. Test each change against a control, and follow privacy and SEO rules while you do it.
This guide focuses on B2B companies that want more conversions by showing each visiting company a more relevant version of their site.
What is website personalization?
Website personalization means showing different content to different visitors based on what you know about them. In B2C, that is often individual behaviour, such as items viewed. In B2B, it is usually the company: a visitor from a bank sees banking examples, and a visitor from a 50-person software firm sees an offer for small teams.
It goes beyond a classic A/B test. An A/B test shows two versions at random to find one winner. Personalization can show many versions at once, each matched to a segment.
How do you know which company is visiting?
Most B2B personalization starts with a reverse IP lookup. The tool matches the visitor's IP address to the organization that owns it, then adds company details from its database. Website visitor identification tools such as Leadfeeder work this way. Leadfeeder describes itself as software that reveals the B2B companies visiting your site, even when they never fill in a form. Dealfront, the company formed when Leadfeeder and Echobot merged in 2022, has operated under the Leadfeeder name since 2026.
Keep the limits in mind:
- It identifies a company, not a person. You personalize at company level.
- It works best when the company's network is registered to the company. Visitors on home internet, mobile networks or some VPNs are harder to match.
- Match rates vary by audience and vendor. Test a tool on your own traffic before you build on it.
You can also personalize without IP data. Use the campaign a visitor came from (UTM parameters), the ad they clicked, whether they are new or returning, or, for known contacts, their stage in your CRM.
Which company attributes can you use?
Typical attributes from a visitor identification or enrichment tool:
- Company name and domain
- Industry
- Company size by number of employees
- Revenue range
- Location
Start with one attribute that splits your buyers in a meaningful way. Industry and company size are the most common because they change which examples and offers make sense. What can you change on your site?
You can change almost anything, but a few elements do most of the work:
| Element | Example of personalization |
|---|---|
| Headline (H1 or H2) | Name the visitor's industry or use case |
| Hero image | Show a setting or product view relevant to their sector |
| Customer logos | Show logos from the same industry or of similar size |
| Case study or testimonial | Feature a customer like them |
| Call to action | "Book a demo" for large accounts, "Start a free trial" for small teams |
| Whole page | Send a segment to a dedicated landing page |
Start with one segment and one or two elements. Every extra variation is something you must write, maintain and measure.
How do you test and measure personalization?
Always keep a control group that sees the default page. Without one, you can't tell whether personalization caused the change.
Track short term and long term. Short-term numbers such as clicks and form fills can look good while the effect on pipeline and closed deals is neutral. You might be fooling yourself if you only look at short-term analytics. Our guide to split testing explains how to run a fair test, and our conversion rate optimization entry covers the basics.

Does personalization affect SEO?
It can if search engines see something different from people. Google's guidance says not to show one set of URLs to Googlebot and another to humans, and counts that as cloaking. Googlebot generally doesn't accept cookies, and Google says its crawler's default IP addresses appear to be based in the USA. So Google will usually see your default version.
To stay safe:
- keep the default page complete and useful on its own
- personalize emphasis, such as examples and logos, rather than hiding core content
- for tests that redirect visitors, use a temporary 302 redirect and a
rel="canonical"link to the original - remove test variations and scripts once a test is finished
What about privacy and GDPR?
The European Commission lists an IP address and a cookie ID as examples of personal data, so EU and UK data protection rules apply even when you personalize by company. EU guidance also says cookies used for analytics, market research or behavioural advertising need the visitor's consent first, and withdrawing consent must be as easy as giving it.
In practice, that means listing the tools in your privacy notice and cookie banner, only running tracking scripts after consent where it is required, and checking each vendor's data processing terms. Read more about GDPR and cookies, and check your setup with your privacy team or counsel.
What should you avoid?
- Don't sacrifice user experience for optimization. Slow pages or flickering content cost more than personalization gains.
- Don't lose sight of your main goal. Every variation should still lead to the same conversion.
- Don't get creepy. Showing relevant examples feels helpful. Greeting a visitor by company name can feel like surveillance.
- Don't build more variations than you can measure. Fewer, stronger segments give clearer results.

Frequently asked questions
How does B2B website personalization know which company is visiting?
Most tools use a reverse IP lookup. They match the visitor's IP address to the organization that owns it and add company details such as industry, size and location. It works at company level, not person level, and it is less reliable for people on home internet or mobile networks.
What replaced Google Optimize?

Does website personalization hurt SEO?
Not if search engines see the same content as a comparable visitor. Google treats showing Googlebot different content from people as cloaking. Keep the default version complete, use temporary 302 redirects for redirect tests and remove test variations once a test ends.
Is IP-based personalization allowed under GDPR?
The European Commission lists an IP address as an example of personal data, so EU and UK data protection rules apply even when you only personalize at company level. Analytics and tracking cookies also generally need consent. Check your setup with your privacy team or counsel.
