ClickUp and Asana are both project and work management tools, and both now include AI agents. ClickUp tries to replace several apps at once, with tasks, docs, chat, whiteboards and dashboards in one workspace. Asana focuses on projects, workflows and goals. Choose ClickUp if you want one app for everything at a lower price. Choose Asana if you want a more focused tool with unlimited automations and strong cross-project reporting.
What is the main difference between ClickUp and Asana?
Scope. ClickUp organises work in Spaces, Folders and Lists, and adds docs and wikis, ClickUp Chat for channels and direct messages, whiteboards and dashboards around the tasks. ClickUp Brain searches tasks, docs and chat to answer questions and runs AI agents.
Asana keeps to projects and tasks with owners, due dates, dependencies and custom fields, shown as lists, boards, calendars, timelines or Gantt charts. Its strength is connecting projects: portfolios track related projects together and goals link work to company objectives. Asana's AI comes as AI Teammates, AI Studio for building AI automations, and Asana Dash, an assistant that summarises meetings, emails and tasks.
How do ClickUp and Asana compare on price?
Prices below were checked on each vendor's pricing page on 1 November 2026, in US dollars per user per month.
| Plan | Billed annually | Monthly or regular price |
|---|---|---|
| ClickUp Free Forever | $0 | $0 |
| ClickUp Core | $9 | Regular price $12 |
| ClickUp Business | $17 | Regular price $25 |
| ClickUp Max | $100 | Regular price $120 |
| Asana Personal | $0 | $0 |
| Asana Starter | $10.99 | $13.49 billed monthly |
| Asana Advanced | $24.99 | $30.49 billed monthly |
| Enterprise (both) | Custom | Custom |
ClickUp lists yearly prices next to a regular price and says yearly billing saves up to 33%. It does not show a separate monthly price table.
ClickUp is cheaper at both levels. Core at $9 compares with Asana Starter at $10.99, and Business at $17 with Asana Advanced at $24.99. ClickUp Core also includes goals, which Asana keeps for Advanced, while ClickUp Business adds resource management, timesheets and advanced dashboards.
Asana wins on automation. Starter includes unlimited automations, while ClickUp allows 1,000 a month on Core and 10,000 on Business. AI is priced differently too. ClickUp includes AI credits on every plan and sells more at $10 per 10,000. Asana charges $0.50 per AI request prepaid or $0.60 pay as you go, with administrative tasks in Asana Dash included.
Which is easier to set up?
Asana, on balance. Both draw learning-curve complaints on G2, but ClickUp's are more about setup. Its most common complaints are a learning curve caused by the sheer number of features, a setup that feels complex and not very intuitive at first, missing nested subfolders, and slow loading when lists hold many tasks and fields. Reviewers do praise its ease of use once it is set up.
Asana reviewers also mention a learning curve, plus a cluttered interface and weak search, but Asana has fewer moving parts to configure. Its structure of tasks, projects, portfolios and goals is fixed, so there are fewer design decisions up front.
Which has the better free plan?
ClickUp's, for teams. Free Forever allows unlimited tasks and unlimited free members, with 60 MB of storage, one form, five Spaces and a ClickUp Brain trial of 500 credits per workspace. Asana Personal is free forever but limited to two users, with unlimited tasks and projects, list, board and calendar views and more than 100 free integrations.
For a team of three or more, Asana needs a paid plan. Asana offers a free trial of Advanced with no credit card, though it does not state the trial length. ClickUp does not describe a trial of paid plans, but offers a full refund within 30 days.
Which works better for marketing teams?
Asana has more built for creative work. Starter includes forms that turn requests into tasks, custom templates for repeatable campaigns and free guests for agencies or freelancers. Advanced adds approvals and proofing for creative review, portfolios to track every campaign together and goals to tie them to targets.
ClickUp suits marketing teams that want briefs, plans and discussion in one place. A campaign brief can live in a doc next to its tasks, comments can become tasks, and team discussion can happen in Chat next to the work. Agencies use ClickUp for client work, and marketing teams for campaign plans and content calendars.
Which works better for sales teams?
Neither is a CRM. ClickUp offers a CRM template for contacts, leads and pipeline stages, so a small team can run a simple sales process next to its projects, but it has no built-in calling or sales sequences. Asana's Advanced plan integrates with Salesforce, which helps sales operations teams link project work, such as onboarding new customers, to CRM records.
If your sales team needs pipelines, email tracking and forecasting, use a dedicated CRM such as HubSpot CRM or Pipedrive, and keep ClickUp or Asana for project work.
What do users say about ClickUp and Asana?
On G2, ClickUp holds 4.6 out of 5 from more than 15,000 reviews. Reviewers praise its flexibility, the number of features and how well it keeps teams organised. Asana holds 4.4 out of 5 from more than 14,000 reviews. Reviewers praise its user-friendly interface and task tracking across teams, and some say useful features sit behind higher pricing tiers. These ratings were checked on 31 October 2026.
The bottom line
Choose ClickUp if you want tasks, docs, chat and whiteboards in one app, a lower price per seat and a free plan for the whole team, and you have someone to set it up. Choose Asana if you want a focused project tool with unlimited automations, portfolios and goals, and approvals for creative work, and you prefer fewer settings to manage.
