Descript is a video and podcast editor that works like a document. It transcribes your recording, and you cut the video by deleting words from the text. It also records remote guests and your screen, cleans up audio with AI and turns long videos into short clips. There is a free plan, and paid plans start at $16 per person per month billed yearly.
Who is Descript for?
Descript suits marketing teams that publish talking-head videos, interviews, webinars and podcasts on YouTube. Because you edit text rather than a timeline, a marketer can make clean cuts without learning a traditional editor. For heavy motion graphics, Descript can send a rough cut to Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve.
What does Descript do for YouTube videos?
Editing by transcript
Descript transcribes in 25 languages. Delete a sentence in the transcript and the video follows. Remove Filler Words and Edit for Clarity take out "ums", repeats and digressions. Studio Sound reduces background noise, and Eye Contact adjusts your gaze when you read from a script.
Underlord and AI credits
Underlord is Descript's AI co-editor. You describe what you want, such as a trailer for a webinar recording, and it makes the edits. AI tools use a monthly allowance of AI credits, and every recording or upload counts against your media hours.
Clips for Shorts
Create Clips finds the moments in a long recording that are most likely to work on social media. You pick the ones you want, add captions and a branded layout, and change the aspect ratio for YouTube Shorts, Reels, TikTok or LinkedIn.
Recording with Rooms
Rooms is a remote recording studio in the browser for up to 10 people. Each person records locally in up to 4K, with a cloud backup, so a weak connection does not ruin the take. Automatic Multicam then switches the layout to show whoever is speaking.
Publishing to YouTube
From the web app, Descript publishes straight to YouTube with title, description, category and tags, and turns markers into chapters. Its AI can also draft YouTube descriptions and social posts. Descript's help centre lists limits: no Shorts, no Brand Account or shared channels, and only the channel owner can publish. Many company channels are Brand Accounts, so check yours first.

What do users say about Descript?
Descript is rated 4.6 out of 5 on G2 from roughly 900 reviews, and 4.7 out of 5 on Capterra from about 180 reviews. Reviewers most often praise text-based editing, fast and accurate transcription and captions, and how quickly non-editors get usable results.
The most common complaints are AI credits that run out quickly, slow performance or bugs on long projects, and a learning curve. Trustpilot is more negative, at about 2.6 out of 5 from around 290 reviews, citing stability, credit costs and support.
When should you choose an alternative?
- You mainly record quick screen videos for sales or support. Loom is built for short async video messages.
- You only want Shorts from long videos, at volume. An AI clipping tool such as OpusClip focuses on finding, captioning and scheduling clips.
- You run live shows or webinars. A browser studio such as StreamYard, or a webinar platform like Livestorm, fits better.
