BuzzSumo is a content research and media intelligence tool. It shows which articles and posts on any topic get the most engagement and links, alerts you when your brand or competitors are mentioned, and helps you find and pitch journalists. Since 2021 it has been part of Cision.
Who is BuzzSumo for?
BuzzSumo suits content marketers who want to know what already performs before they write, and PR and communications teams that track coverage and pitch the press. Its plans reflect that split: Content Creation for marketers, PR & Comms for agencies and press teams, and Suite for whole marketing teams.
What are BuzzSumo's main features?
Content research
The Content Analyzer is BuzzSumo's core research tool. Enter a topic, keyword or website and you see the content that got the most engagement on Facebook, X (Twitter), Reddit and YouTube, plus how many links it earned. You can look back from the last 15 minutes up to five years, depending on your plan. Trending Feeds show what is gaining traction now, and the Question Analyzer surfaces the questions people ask about a topic. Both help with evergreen content and timely posts alike.
Monitoring
Alerts track mentions of your brand, competitors, topics and keywords, and new links to your content. On the PR & Comms plan and above, alerts can go to Slack, and coverage reports summarize your press mentions.
Media database and outreach
BuzzSumo's homepage now leads with its journalist database. You can search journalists by what they actually write about, contact them, and use an AI pitching tool to draft pitches. If you send press releases, read our rules for writing a good press release.
Influencers and YouTube
You can find influencers on Facebook, X, YouTube and TikTok. The Suite plan adds a YouTube Analyzer for organic and paid video.

What do users say about BuzzSumo?
BuzzSumo is rated 4.5 out of 5 from 107 reviews on G2 at the time of checking. In G2's summary of recent reviews, users praise its content research, how quickly it finds high-performing articles and having many content tools in one place.
The complaints in the same summary are price, especially for small teams that need the advanced features, and an interface that can feel overwhelming at first because of the number of data points. The summary is based on only a handful of recent mentions.
When should you choose an alternative?
- You mainly need SEO keyword and backlink data. An SEO suite such as Semrush or Ahrefs fits better.
- You mainly need brand monitoring and sentiment. Compare Brand24 or Mention.
- You are a small team on a tight budget. The entry plan costs $159 per month billed yearly, so check whether free tools cover your research first.
