Majestic is a backlink research tool. It shows who links to any website, how strong and relevant those links are, and how a site's link profile has changed over time. It does not do keyword research or site audits, so most teams use it next to another SEO tool.

What is Majestic?

Majestic is made by Majestic-12 Ltd, a link intelligence company founded in 2004. Its main tool, Site Explorer, lists the backlinks, referring domains, anchor text and most-linked pages of any domain or URL. Majestic scores sites with its own metrics, Trust Flow and Citation Flow.

Who is Majestic for?

Majestic suits link builders, SEO specialists, agencies and domain buyers whose work centres on link building and link audits. It is less suited to marketers who want one tool for keywords, rankings and audits.

Key features

Site Explorer

Enter any domain or URL to see its backlinks and referring domains, the anchor text used, which pages attract the most links, and new and lost links.

Trust Flow, Citation Flow and Topical Trust Flow

Trust Flow reflects the quality of links to a site and Citation Flow reflects their quantity. Topical Trust Flow places a site among more than 800 topic categories, so you can see whether its links come from relevant sites. These are Majestic's own scores, not Google metrics. Read more about your link profile.

Fresh and Historic Index

The Fresh Index holds links seen in roughly the last 120 days and is updated several times a day. The Historic Index, on Pro and API, reaches back to 2006 and lets you look at a site's backlink history.

Comparison and research tools

Pro adds Compare Sites, Clique Hunter, Backlink History, raw data exports, custom reports and email alerts. It also includes a rank tracker that uses your Google Search Console data.

API

The API plan gives full access to Majestic's data for your own tools and dashboards, with five users.

What do users say about Majestic?

On G2, Majestic holds 4.3 out of 5 from 73 reviews, far fewer than the big SEO suites. The points reviewers mention most are its backlink analysis and detailed reporting. G2 lists few written complaints, and its comparison pages note that Majestic has fewer recent reviews than Ahrefs.

When should you choose an alternative?

  • You want keywords, audits and links in one tool. Choose an all-in-one suite such as Ahrefs, Semrush or Moz Pro.
  • You only need a quick backlink check now and then. Free tools such as Google Search Console show the links Google knows about for your own site.

  • Compare Sites and Backlink History. On Pro and up, compares the link profiles of several sites and shows how a site's backlinks changed over time.
