Planka is a Kanban board you host yourself. It looks and works much like Trello, with boards, lists and cards, but runs on your own server so your project data stays in-house. The Community edition is free; the Pro edition costs from €7.20 per user per month on yearly billing and can also be hosted for you in Germany.
Who is Planka for?
Planka suits organisations that want a simple Kanban tool but prefer to keep project data on their own server rather than in a third-party cloud. Planka aims its paid offer at businesses, associations and public authorities, and its free Community edition also suits IT teams that already run their own servers. Small teams with no one to manage a server will find a hosted tool easier, although Planka's Pro Hosted plan covers that case for a fee.
What are Planka's main features?
Boards, lists and cards
Projects contain boards, boards contain lists, and lists contain cards. Cards hold comments, attachments, due dates and a stopwatch, and descriptions support rich Markdown. Changes sync in real time for everyone on the board.
Self-hosting and data control
You install the Community edition on your own server, for example with Docker, and the data never leaves it. Pro Hosted is the managed alternative: a dedicated instance with an isolated database, hosted in Germany, with a data processing agreement under the GDPR.
Pro features
Pro adds calendar, timeline, map and media views, worker and guest roles for external collaborators, board and card templates, recurring cards, advanced search, PDF and HTML export, custom logo and colours, full phone and tablet support and single sign-on over OIDC. Pro customers also get support from the developers, with a first answer within 24 hours on business days in German or English.
Languages and notifications
The interface is available in more than 35 languages, translated by the community. Notifications can go out through more than 100 providers.

What do users say about Planka?
Planka has no reviews on G2 at the time of checking, so there is no public review summary to quote. Its GitHub repository had about 12,700 stars at the time of checking. Before choosing it, try the free demo, whose data resets every hour, or install the Community edition.
When should you choose an alternative?
- You don't want to run a server. A hosted tool such as Trello or MeisterTask is simpler.
- You need goals, portfolios and reporting across teams. Look at Asana.
