Editor's note, November 1, 2026: New list: 10 Trello alternatives compared on board views, free plan limits, price and public reviews.
How we choose: we research each tool on its own site, check prices at the source and read what users say in public reviews. Our method
Asana is the best Trello alternative for most teams. It keeps a board view your team already knows, then adds list, calendar, timeline and Gantt views, forms, dashboards and unlimited automations on its Starter plan, at a price close to Trello Premium. If you are leaving because of Trello's free plan limits, choose ClickUp: its free plan includes board and calendar views with unlimited members.
Other tools suit narrower needs. monday.com is the most polished board-first tool for teams that want dashboards, Notion fits teams whose boards were really notes and plans, MeisterTask feels closest to Trello, Microsoft Planner makes sense if you already pay for Microsoft 365, and Planka is a Trello-style board you host yourself.
Most teams switch because they hit a limit. Free Trello Workspaces stop at 10 collaborators and 10 boards, and the Calendar, Timeline, Table and Dashboard views need Premium. So compare what each alternative gives you on its free and first paid plan, how easily you can bring your boards across, and how much setup the new tool needs. Prices below were checked on 31 October 2026.

How we chose
We ranked each tool on the five points of our published method, in this order. First, fit: how well it replaces Trello's boards and fixes the reasons teams leave, such as the collaborator cap, paid views and limited reporting. Second, the features that matter for that switch, such as board and timeline views, automations, dashboards and Trello imports, taken from each vendor's own documentation and pricing page. Third, price and how clearly it is stated, including free plan limits, trials and seat minimums. Fourth, what users report in public reviews on G2. Fifth, whether the product is actively developed.
Every tool was researched on its own website, pricing page and help documentation and in public reviews on G2. General work management tools that keep a board view rank highest. Tools built for a narrower case, such as software teams, Microsoft 365 companies or self-hosting, rank lower because they suit fewer of the teams leaving Trello.

The natural step up from Trello. It keeps the board view your team knows and adds timelines, forms, dashboards and unlimited automations at a price close to Trello Premium.
Why it's on the list
Every Asana project can switch between list, board, calendar, timeline and Gantt views, so a team can keep working on a board while managers plan dates on a timeline. Starter costs $10.99 per user per month billed annually, close to Trello Premium at $10, and adds reporting dashboards, forms, custom fields, templates, free guests and unlimited automations, where Trello caps automation runs below Premium. Advanced adds portfolios, goals, workload balancing, time tracking and approvals. Asana holds 4.4 out of 5 on G2 from more than 14,000 reviews, the same rating as Trello, with its user-friendly interface the most common praise.
Pros
- Board view plus list, calendar, timeline and Gantt views
- Unlimited automations and free guests on Starter
- Goals, portfolios and workload balancing on Advanced
- 4.4 out of 5 on G2 from more than 14,000 reviews

The best free alternative. It keeps a board view, adds almost every other view, and its Free Forever plan has unlimited members, but it takes more setup than Trello.
Why it's on the list
ClickUp's pricing page lists board, list, table and calendar views as included on the Free Forever plan, along with unlimited tasks, unlimited free members and unlimited docs, which removes Trello's limit of 10 collaborators and 10 boards on free Workspaces. Core costs $9 per user per month billed yearly, less than Trello Premium, and adds Gantt charts, unlimited storage and 1,000 automations a month. Docs, chat, whiteboards, dashboards and ClickUp Brain AI sit in the same workspace. G2 rates ClickUp 4.6 out of 5 from more than 15,000 reviews, and a learning curve and complex first setup are the most common complaints.
Pros

- Docs, chat and dashboards in the same tool
- Core costs less per user than Trello Premium
Cons

- November 1, 2026
The most polished board-first alternative, with a 4.7 rating on G2. Its free plan is smaller than Trello's, and the timeline and calendar views start on Standard.
Why it's on the list
monday.com is built around boards like Trello, but each board is made of typed columns such as status, owner, date and priority, and the same items can be shown as a table, kanban board, timeline, Gantt chart or calendar. Automations, integrations with tools such as Slack and Jira, and dashboards turn board data into progress and workload charts. The Free plan covers 2 seats and 3 boards, paid plans start at 3 seats from $9 per seat per month billed annually on Basic, and timeline, Gantt and calendar views start on Standard, at $12. It holds 4.7 out of 5 on G2 from 17,885 reviews, with ease of use the most common praise.
Pros
- Kanban, table, timeline, Gantt and calendar views of one board
- Dashboards for progress and workload
- 4.7 out of 5 on G2 from 17,885 reviews
- 14-day Pro trial without a credit card
Cons
- The free plan covers only 2 seats and 3 boards
- Paid plans start at 3 seats
- Timeline, Gantt and calendar views need Standard
Who it's for
Marketing and operations teams that want Trello's visual style with more structure, reporting and automation.

4. Notion
Sales and marketing- Starting price
- $10 per seat per month, billed yearly
- Free plan
- Yes
- Free trial
- No
- Price checked
- November 1, 2026
The best switch if Trello was really your team's notebook. Boards live inside docs and wikis, so plans, notes and tasks sit together.
Why it's on the list
A Notion database can show the same items as a board, table, calendar, timeline or chart, with statuses, owners, subtasks and dependencies on every plan. Because every card is also a page, it can hold a full brief, meeting notes or a playbook, and the board can sit inside a team wiki. The Free plan suits individuals, but block storage is limited once two or more members join, so teams usually move to Plus at $10 per seat per month paid yearly. Notion holds 4.6 out of 5 on G2 from about 14,000 reviews, and the learning curve is the most common complaint.
Pros
- Boards, calendars and timelines inside docs and wikis
- Every card is a full page for briefs and notes
- Subtasks and dependencies on every plan
- A low per-seat price on Plus
Cons
- The Free plan limits block storage once two or more members join
- You design the workspace yourself, and G2 reviewers mention a learning curve
- No resource planning, which teams that need it find in dedicated project tools
Who it's for
Content, marketing and startup teams that want their wiki, notes and task boards in one place.
Who should skip it
Teams that need workload planning or strict workflows. Asana, monday.com or Wrike fit better.

5. Wrike
Sales and marketing- Starting price
- $10 per user per month
- Free plan
- Yes
- Free trial
- Yes
- Price checked
- October 31, 2026
The pick for bigger marketing and operations teams that want structured requests, proofing and Gantt planning. More than a small team needs.
Why it's on the list
Wrike shows the same work as a board, table, calendar or Gantt chart with dependencies and milestones. Dynamic request forms collect work from colleagues and outside people, and proofing lets reviewers mark up files, compare versions and approve work. There is a free plan with board and table views, and Team costs $10 per user per month billed annually for 2 to 15 users, adding Gantt charts, shareable dashboards and AI features. G2 rates Wrike 4.2 out of 5 from more than 4,500 reviews, and a steep learning curve is the most common complaint.
Pros
- Request forms, proofing and approvals for review-heavy work
- Gantt charts with dependencies and milestones
- A free plan with board and table views
- Two-week free trial without a credit card
Cons
- Steep learning curve, per G2 reviewers
- The Team plan stops at 15 users
- The lowest G2 rating of the top five
Who it's for
Marketing, creative and operations teams that handle many requests and review rounds and need reporting for managers.
Who should skip it

- Yes
- Price checked
- October 31, 2026
The closest match to Trello's simple boards, with automations, built-in notes and hosting in Germany. Its free plan is tight at 3 projects.
Why it's on the list
MeisterTask is built around Kanban boards where tasks move between sections, much like Trello cards between lists. Every plan, including Free, can import projects from Trello and Asana, and Free allows unlimited tasks and team members but only 3 projects. Pro costs €12.50 per user per month billed yearly and adds unlimited projects, recurring tasks, automations and integrations, and Business adds a timeline view and reports. MeisterLabs hosts the service in a data centre in Frankfurt. G2 rates MeisterTask 4.6 out of 5, from a smaller base of 173 reviews.
Pros
- Kanban boards that work much like Trello
- Import from Trello on every plan, including Free
- Unlimited team members on the free plan
- Hosted in Germany, which EU companies often prefer for GDPR
Cons
- The free plan allows only 3 projects
- Pro costs more per user than Trello Standard or Premium
- The timeline view needs the Business plan
Who it's for
Small European teams that want simple boards, an easy move from Trello and EU data hosting.
Who should skip it
Teams that need portfolios, deep reporting or docs and chat in one app. Asana or ClickUp fit better.

- October 31, 2026
The right switch if your team works with developers or already uses Atlassian tools. Its free plan has the same 10-user cap as Trello but adds timeline and calendar views.
Why it's on the list
Jira comes from Atlassian, the company behind Trello, and tracks work as a backlog, board, list, timeline or calendar. Workflows, custom fields and request forms are configurable, and templates cover business projects such as marketing campaigns. The Free plan covers up to 10 users with timeline and calendar views and 150 automation steps a month, and Standard costs $9.70 per user per month on monthly billing and adds Rovo AI. G2 rates Jira 4.3 out of 5 from more than 8,000 reviews, with a steep learning curve and a complex interface the most common complaints.
Pros
- From Atlassian, the same company as Trello
- Timeline and calendar views on the free plan
- Configurable workflows, forms and templates
- Rovo AI search, chat and agents from Standard
Cons
- The free plan stops at 10 users, the same cap as Trello
- Steep learning curve and a complex interface, per G2 reviewers
- Overwhelming for simple projects, per G2 reviewers
Who it's for
Product, marketing and operations teams that hand work to developers or already use Confluence and other Atlassian tools.
Who should skip it
Non-technical teams that want simple boards. MeisterTask, Asana or monday.com fit better.

8. Microsoft Planner
Sales and marketing- Starting price
- $10 per user per month
- Free plan
- No
- Free trial
- Yes
- Price checked
- November 1, 2026
The obvious choice if your company already runs on Microsoft 365. Board-based plans are included in most business subscriptions and work inside Teams and Outlook.
Why it's on the list
Microsoft's documentation says Planner is included with Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Business Standard with Copilot and Business Premium with Copilot, and with Office 365 E1, E3 and E5. Those licences give you board, grid, schedule and charts views for team plans, plus My Day and My Tasks, which covers what most teams use Trello for. Timeline, People and Goals views need a Planner Plan 1 licence, and Gantt charts, dependencies, sprints and custom fields need Planner and Project Plan 3 or Plan 5. Users can try the Plan 3 features free for 30 days if their admin allows trials.
Pros
- Included in most Microsoft 365 business subscriptions
- Board, grid, schedule and charts views in basic plans
- Works across Teams, Outlook and the web
- Connects to business processes through Power Automate and APIs
Cons
- Timeline, goals and Gantt views need paid Planner licences
- Without Microsoft 365 you need a separate Planner licence
- Planner's licence tiers are harder to follow than Trello's plans
Who it's for
Teams in companies that already use Microsoft 365 and want task boards inside Teams without buying another tool.
Who should skip it
Teams on Google Workspace or without Microsoft 365. Asana, ClickUp or MeisterTask are simpler to buy on their own.

9. Basecamp
Sales and marketing- Starting price
- $29 per month, flat price
- Free plan
- Yes
- Free trial
- Yes
- Price checked
- October 31, 2026
A calmer alternative that swaps Trello's single board for a project page with to-dos, Kanban-style Card Tables, chat and files, at a flat monthly price.
Why it's on the list
Each Basecamp project gets a message board, to-do lists, a Kanban-style Card Table, group chat, a schedule and files on one page. Pricing is flat per account rather than per user, from $29 a month for 3 projects and up to 5 users, and the free Personal plan covers one project for up to 3 people. Clients can be invited and shown only what you choose, though they count as users. G2 rates Basecamp 4.1 out of 5 from almost 5,500 reviews, and missing advanced reporting and scheduling is the most common complaint.
Pros
- Card Tables give Kanban boards inside each project
- Chat, message boards and files sit next to the work
- Flat monthly pricing, not per user
- 30-day free trial without a credit card
Cons
- The free plan covers only one project
- Clients and guests count toward user limits
- Limited reporting and customisation, per G2 reviewers
Who it's for
Agencies, small businesses and remote teams that want to cut email and run client projects in one place.
Who should skip it
Teams that want a board-first tool or detailed planning. Asana, ClickUp or monday.com fit better.

Best for organisations that want a Trello-style board on their own server

10. Planka
Sales and marketing- Starting price
- €7.20 per user per month, billed yearly
- Free plan
- Yes
- Free trial
- Yes
- Price checked
- November 1, 2026
The closest thing to a self-hosted Trello. The Community edition is free to run on your own server, and Pro adds calendar views, roles and single sign-on.
Why it's on the list
Planka follows Trello's model of projects, boards, lists and cards, with comments, attachments, due dates, Markdown and real-time updates. The Community edition is free to self-host, for example with Docker, so project data stays on your own server. Pro Self-Hosted costs €7.20 per user per month billed yearly and adds calendar, timeline and map views, guest roles, templates and single sign-on, and Pro Hosted runs a dedicated instance in Germany from €8.50 per user with a 5-user minimum. Planka publishes its code under what it calls a Fair Use License, so it is source available rather than open source, and it had no G2 reviews when this list was written.
Pros
- Trello-style boards, lists and cards
- A free Community edition you host yourself
- A hosted Pro option in Germany with a GDPR data processing agreement
- 30-day Pro trial without a credit card
Cons
- Someone has to run the server for the free edition
- Calendar views, templates and single sign-on need Pro
- No G2 reviews to judge user sentiment
Who it's for
IT-led teams, public bodies and companies that must keep project data in-house.
Who should skip it
Teams with nobody to manage a server and no need to self-host. MeisterTask or Asana are simpler.
More about Planka: pricing, features and alternatives
Also considered
- Airtable: A database you design yourself, better suited to content and campaign operations than to replacing a task board.
- Smartsheet: Spreadsheet-style project management with no free plan, a better fit for teams that plan in spreadsheets than for Trello users.
Frequently asked questions
Why do teams look for a Trello alternative?
Most hit the Free plan's limits of 10 collaborators and 10 boards per Workspace and 250 automation runs a month. Calendar, Timeline, Table and Dashboard views also need Premium at $10 per user per month billed annually, and G2 reviewers often mention limited reporting. Teams that need timelines or workload views move to tools that include them on a cheaper plan.
What is the best free alternative to Trello?
ClickUp, because its Free Forever plan includes board, list, table and calendar views with unlimited members. Jira is free for up to 10 users with timeline and calendar views, MeisterTask's free plan allows unlimited members but only 3 projects, and Planka's Community edition is free if you host it yourself. Asana's and monday.com's free plans cover only two people.
Is Asana better than Trello?
For teams that run several projects with dates and dependencies, usually yes. Asana adds timeline and Gantt views, dashboards, forms and unlimited automations on its first paid plan, at a price close to Trello Premium. For a small team that only needs a simple board, Trello's free plan is more generous.
Can I move my Trello boards to another tool?
Yes. MeisterTask can import projects from Trello on every plan, including Free, and several other tools in this list offer Trello imports too. Check each vendor's help centre for what carries over, such as attachments, checklists and comments, before you switch.
What is the best Trello alternative for Microsoft 365 users?
Microsoft Planner. It is included with Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Business Standard with Copilot, Business Premium with Copilot and Office 365 E1, E3 and E5, and gives board, grid, schedule and charts views inside Teams, Outlook and the web.
